Configuration Management with Cfengine

Cfengine is a policy-based configuration management system. Its primary function is to provide automated configuration and maintenance of computers, from a policy specification.

The cfengine project was started in 1993 as a reaction to the complexity and non-portability of shell scripting for Unix configuration management, and continues today. The aim was to absorb frequently used coding paradigms into a declarative, domain-specific language that would offer self-documenting configuration.

about the speaker:
Steven Kreuzer has been working with Open Source technologies since as long as he can remember, starting out with a 486 salvaged from a dumpster behind his neighborhood computer store. In his spare time he enjoys doing things with technology that have absolutely no redeeming social value.

Why Women Quit Technology Careers

That's the title of a recent Computer World article. Not surprisingly, harassment was listed as reason number one. I can't really comment on this point since, as I've written before it's not been an issue in my own IT career. (Which some may argue, is why I still have a career in IT).

NetBSD Moves To a 2-Clause BSD License

jschauma writes "Alistair Crooks, president of the NetBSD Foundation, announced recently that it 'has changed its recommended license to be a 2-clause BSD license.' This makes NetBSD even more easily available to a number of organizations and individuals who may have been put off by the advertising or endorsement clauses. See Alistair's email and NetBSD's licensing information for more details."

FreeBSD in Firefox 3

Last week I mentioned that some innovative Firefox development occurs in Toronto. Well, the next time someone tells you that they don't (or wouldn't) use FreeBSD, point them to this

Open Source Security

Security is the theme for the June issue of the OSBR. BSD readers will recognize one of the authors: David Maxwell, committer for the NetBSD project and former security officer.
